Hand-Finishing Stage Posed Obstacle to Boosting Production

We look at a solution that enabled one supplier to automate a process that previously depended on manual work and labor-intensive methods.

Solution

Summary of the solution

  • The honing machine was able to reliably finish deep, narrow bores.

  • Nissin Manufacturing’s robotically automated honing machine enabled the supplier to automate its internal bore surface finishing process, including the loading and unloading of workpieces.

  • The machine slashed processing time per part from ten minutes to just four, enabling the number of operators to be significantly reduced from ten to just one.

Machining Trial Demonstrates Nissin Machine’s Ability to Automate Manual Process

The employee approached a trading company with whom they had a relationship to explore the possibilities of automating the process.

“An employee from the trading company recommended Nissin Manufacturing. After contacting Nissin, a representative promptly paid us a visit, and understood our requirements. Nissin proposed using a honing machine to perform the internal bore surface finishing process previously performed manually,” explained the employee.

The Nissin representative explained that honing stones expand radially achieve consistent finishes even in deep, narrow bore holes. By using a Nissin honing machine, the supplier could also automate the loading and unloading of parts, effectively reducing operator workload.

The employee and the other members of the production division requested Nissin to conduct a processing test to verify the machine’s performance. They discovered that the machine reduced processing time from ten minutes to just four, more than halving it. In addition, precision improved significantly, with the machine achieving a more consistent finish compared to what could be achieved manually. Satisfied with the test results, the employee encouraged the supplier’s upper management to purchase the Nissin honing machine. Consequently, the supplier agreed to purchase the G50-AR2, a honing machine with automatic loading and unloading capabilities.

“With the installation of this machine, internal bore surface finishing is now automated, and operators primarily monitor operations. Staffing requirements have decreased significantly from when we relied heavily on manpower, and we now reliably achieve consistent internal bore surface finishing, regardless of the operator of the machine,” explained the employee.

The supplier continues to benefit from various advice from Nissin Manufacturing, taking advantage of their specialized knowledge and extensive honing experience. The supplier is now considering the acquisition of a second machine to further increase production.
