Achieving Consistent Accuracy Without Skilled Operators

In the course of gathering information, the production team heard about the Nissin G25-MM1 honing machine, which was installed at the factory of another company in the manufacturer’s corporate group, and decided to arrange a viewing immediately. Operators on the factory explained that Nissin Manufacturing honing machines have a stone expansion system controlled by a servo motor. The system allows ultra-high levels of precision at fixed amount and constant pressure, enabling consistent accuracy. Another, thanks to on-machine measuring, the G25-MM1 honing machine also adjusts bore dimensions automatically, eliminating the need for skilled operators to perform manual adjustments. The team also learned that basic operations could be performed by simply setting the workpiece in place and pressing ‘start’, thereby enabling more consistent production. After seeing this, the team asked to be referred to the contact at Nissin.

“After we had discussed our issues in detail, Nissin proposed 1 process (only finish honing) using a single-spindle machine with on-machine measuring. After consideration, we decided to replace our existing bore finishing machines, including those that performed internal griding and single-pass honing, with the Nissin G25-MM1 honing machine,” says the employee.

After introducing the G25-MM1, the production team found that its diametric accuracy improved as a result of the transition to auto sizing honing, with roundness and cylindricity deviations within 1 micron and 1.5 micron, respectively. They also succeeded in reducing processing time, which they didn’t think could be improved on, by an additional 20%.

By introducing the Nissin honing machine, the manufacturer was able to guarantee optimum quality as well as achieving its target production volume. Realizing that automation holds promise for the future, the manufacturer has decided to introduce the machine in more factories in future.
